This section is in honor of those Lynn Police Officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving the city of Lynn.Lynn Police Officer James H. Carroll Killed in the Line of Duty Saturday June 25th 1910 Lynn Police Officer James Carroll was assigned to provide a bank escort to Thomas A. Landregan, who was a partner in the Landregan & Welch Shoe Company of Lynn. As Officer Carroll and Mr. Landregan exited the "Lynn National Bank" at ten past nine that morning, a group of three men followed them from behind. When the two reached the intersection of Oxford and Willow Streets, Officer Carroll and Mr. Landregan were attacked. The suspects immediately shot Mr. Landregan and attempted to take the money bags from him. As Officer Carroll went to the aid of Mr. Landregan he was also shot. Witnesses reported that Officer Carroll attempted to place himself between the robbers and Mr. Landregan in an attempt to shield him from further harm. The three robbers then emptied all remaining rounds into both men killing them. Officer Carroll at the time of his murder, had served as a Lynn Police Officer for 28 years. Lynn Police Officer Francis "Frank" V. Quinn Killed in the Line of Duty Thursday February 16th, 1933 Lynn Police Officer Frank Quinn was assigned to a downtown walking beat, where he stopped in the doorway of a pharmacy at the intersection of Washington & Western Avenue to warm himself from the cold February temperatures. From this vantage point, Officer Quinn observed three suspicious men walking up Washington Street towards Western Ave. Officer Quinn called out to them and asked them to stop so he could determine what they were doing out past midnight. As Officer Quinn approached them, the men attacked the officer grabbing him by the collar of his woolen coat and pinned him up against a building. At this time one of his attackers then pulled out a revolver. Officer Quinn then pleaded with them "Don't shoot, please think of my family" and in a valiant effort to protect himself Officer Quinn attempted to draw his own firearm, but was shot and then fell to the pavement. Two of the suspects ran away while the the third suspect stayed behind and shot Officer Quinn a second time, killing him where he lay on the sidewalk. At the time of his death Officer Quinn had been a Lynn Police Officer for just over two years. He was previously commended for bravery by the Lynn Police Department on March 20th, 1931. Lynn Police Officer Gary L. Twyman Killed in the Line of Duty Monday October 9th, 1995. Lynn Police Officer Gary Twyman (while off duty and unarmed) had come to the aid of a female party who was having domestic issues with a former boyfriend. While trying to protect this female from her male attacker, the suspect suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Officer Twyman, fatally wounding him. The suspect then fled from the home and was pursued on foot by responding Lynn Police Officers who were able to prevent his escape. After numerous commands were made for the suspect to drop the knife and after he made an aggressive move towards officers, the suspect was shot and wounded. The suspect was taken into custody, charged and convicted for the murder of Officer Twyman. At the time of his death, Officer Twyman had been a Lynn Police Officer for nine years and he had previously been commended by the Department for his actions on December 11, 1998 in connection with the arrests of six suspects who had committed two robberies while armed with handguns. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" John 15:13 May we continue to carry their memory in our hearts and minds as we faithfully carry out our duties to the citizens of Lynn, and hope that we never add another name to this list of our fallen brothers. May they forever rest in peace for their sacrifice in protecting our great city. Page Design & Historical Research Completed by: LPA Secretary Paul Cotter
